It disinfects the water quickly, killing everything in it but doesn't retain the high levels of chlorine thus enabling bathers to use the water without discomfort.
In addition to your regular maintenance routine of adding trichlorine tablets/granules, it is recommened that you shock treat your pool water every two weeks to ensure that the water is kept clean.
Can I use normal chlorine to shock treat the pool?
Using normal chlorine to shock treat your pool is not an efficient use of the product. It's a slow chlorine and so doesn't have an immediate effect on the bacteria, you'll have to use increased amount and so the pool will take longer to return to normal levels. It will also increase the cyanuric acid in the water which will over stabilise the pool and stop the chlorine from working altogether.
